The data suggest that in the chromosphere
magnetic field lines break and reconnect to generate the heat and drive the electrons up into the loops, Aschwanden says.

In 2015, NASA launched the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft to study the mysterious interactions between Earth and the solar wind when our planet's
magnetic field lines occasionally
break and reconnect, which also affects auroral activity.
«The hyperbolic flux tube
breaks the filament's
magnetic field lines and reconnects them with those of the ambient Sun, so that the filament's
magnetic energy is stripped away,» Chintzoglou said.
CMEs occur when
magnetic field lines at the visible surface of the Sun become tangled and
break, releasing large quantities of electrically charged particles into space.
If the cyclotron
line is from circling electrons, in contrast, then the
magnetic field strength around the neutron star would not be exceptionally strong, and thus the
field is probably not the reason these stars
break the Eddington limit.
«If the cyclotron
line is from protons, then we know that these
magnetic fields around the neutron star are extremely strong and may in fact be helping to
breaking the Eddington limit,» says Brightman.
They emerge where dense bundles of
magnetic field lines from the sun's interior
break through the surface.
As the
magnetic field lines pushed close together, the long
lines broke apart and reformed like a single stretched rubber band, forming a slingshot that propels the plasma and releases the energy into the plasma, accelerating the plasma and heating it.
