In an effort to protect fertile soils, prevent permanent structures and
maintain scenic vistas, Suffolk voters in 2007 approved a referendum authorizing county officials to pay farmers not to develop their property.
WHEREAS, Farms also provide jobs, use less in services than they pay in property taxes,
maintain wildlife habitat and water quality when well - managed, create beautiful
scenic vistas, highlight the cultural heritage of many rural areas in the County, and offer fresh, local food to County residents;
