Car insurance is made up of three
major parts: liability coverage, which is required in virtually all states; collision coverage, which is optional and pays for
damage to your car from
crashes with other cars or objects; and comprehensive coverage, which is also optional and covers just about everything else — such as a collision with a moose, hail
damage or car theft, Passmore says.
But that's just an average; if you're at fault in a
crash that causes serious injuries,
major property
damage or death, you could be sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars — or more.
While the majority of those are categorized as «fender benders», resulting in relatively minor
damage and rarely in
major injuries, 42,000 people still die each year in serious
