One of the reasons to
make apple pie filling is you can store it in the freezer for months and make apple pie whenever you want to.
Now, you can either
make the apple pie filling the night before like the oats and then warm it up in the morning, or you can make it in the morning and spoon the fresh mixture all over your oats.

Beyond rye flour - one of the best blueberry
pies I've ever
made was based on a Cooks Illustrated recipe which used grated
apple in the
filling to provide a natural pectin - it really kept the
filling from falling all over the place.
