While I typically don't find Hilton
award nights to be good points redemptions, this simple perk means Hilton properties are almost always at the top of my list when
booking a cash stay or
using a third - party rewards mechanism like Welcome Rewards to
make a
booking.
This might be a good opportunity to take advantage of the Barclaycard Arrival's $ 466 in free travel for some readers, but because Donna has so many Ultimate Rewards points, it may
make sense for her to
use some of them to pay for the
booking as opposed to transferring the points out to United to

use the miles for travel on a number of American's airline partners —
make sure you factor in these surcharges when working out just how good a deal an
award booking is.
At 1.81 cents / mile there will definitely be occasions where buying miles in this promotion and
using them to
book an
award will save you money (possibly even a lot of money) but the key here is to
make sure
awards are available before you dive in and buy miles.
Just
make sure that you
use them just as frequently as you earn them, otherwise that
award you were waiting to
book might suddenly become out of reach.
Avianca is a member of the Star Alliance so LifeMiles can be
used for travel on a host of interesting airlines — you can even
use LifeMiles to
book highly coveted Lufthansa First Class
awards — so that
makes any LifeMiles sale interesting.
Then you would
use the
award booking engine on the airline's website or
make a phone call to reserve.
It also is significantly cheaper than
booking directly with Qatar, since they
use a distance - based
award chart which
makes long - haul
awards prohibitively expensive.
And the alternative
use of Avios —
booking an international
award — might not always
make sense because of high taxes and fees.
I suspect that the best
use of this will be when people combine the Hyatt Family Rate with an
award night
booking to
make what would be an otherwise expensive trip into a slightly more economical one.

use when

use the Great Circle Mapper to measure the distance for these non-stop flights and then

made to determine how many Avios you will need to

made award trips great value — I was able to
book my First Class flight from Manila to Europe for only 72,250 miles one - way —
using United MileagePlus miles for the same trip would have cost 115,000 miles!

making airline arrangements or

Award availability is out of your control and you will never really know if you will be able to
use your points to
book something until you get out there and try to
make the redemption.
