To read iBooks on PC / Mac, you need to
make iBooks convertable.
Overall, these features are a big deal as
they make iBooks a stronger competitor to Kindle for iPhone.
Does Apple plan to
make iBooks app part of the iOS rather than being an optional download as it is now?
Sorry but it's called iBooks Author and not ePub Author for a reason: it is meant to
make iBooks not ePub files.
When iOS 8 came out last year one of the many enhancements and changes included
making iBooks becoming preloaded on all existing and new Apple devices.
Things might change if
they made an iBooks app for Android
The only thing that might make this even better is if they actually
made an iBooks app for Android, so people could read their eBooks and audiobooks purchased via iBooks on open android eReaders, but still be able to sync it with iCloud, and have progress, notes, etc., be synced to iBooks for Mac or iOS devices.
Apple is a potential competitive player, but it's marginalized itself by
making its iBooks unreadable on non-Apple hardware.
For schools, Book Creator Free is a great new way for teachers to try out
making an iBook.

In 2012, Apple held an event in New York City to talk about education, where it unveiled its
iBooks 2 platform, its tool for
making and publishing books online, but even that event was all about the iPad.

The agency model was created by Apple who

I agree with what Guido said, but i'm using a different approach:
making a «standard» epub for Kobo / Nook / ADE and a different one for
iBooks, plus one for Kindle (ported with previewer rather than Calibre).
