make you feel like you're less
of a person than you are.

In fact, we may rightly claim that the preaching
of the gospel and the administration
of the sacraments must necessarily go together; to put it in language used by Professor Whitehead in Religion in the
Making, the «cult» (by which Whitehead
meant the social action
of worship) and the «myth» (by which he
meant the
story which explains a society's worship) can never be separated.
But, in my experience, sometimes the best way to keep communication healthy and open is to go to bed angry and then talk about it the next morning when you've had enough sleep to know that leaving the milk out in the car probably wasn't a veiled act
of aggression
meant to symbolize every problem in the relationship, but rather just the sort
of mistake anyone would
make while distracted by a fascinating
story on NPR.
However, by
making it clear that we do not
mean these
stories as literal truth we should minimize the likelihood
of these results.
Learning the
meanings of the
stories and symbolism in religion and otherwise can
make one's life infinitely rich.
The
story makes innumerable references to the Bible, from the opening parody
of biblical language in the description
of Astor, to the parody
of Pilate's questioning
of Christ in the lawyer's interview with a mute Bartleby, to the seriously
meant quotation from Job.
Hauerwas and the other essayists are on firmer ground when they write
of the importance
of holding on to the Christian
story, which gives
meaning to individual
stories and provides «rich resources to
make possible friendship between the elderly and, perhaps most important, becoming and remaining friends with ourselves as we age.»
Saying that you're dedicated to tearing down systemic race - based bias doesn't
mean that you have to
make sure that you go hug a black person, it
means that you no longer find yourself as the center and most important part
of your
story.

So I wish to
make it very clear I am going to ask a questions to LEARN not to argue: What does the
story of the Isrealites and the manna from heaven
mean to you personally, as a «conservative» Christian?
These books provide an opportunity to explore that common
story, to accept the gifts
of fundamentalism along with its flaws and to revisit how religious

Just as it would be impossible to replace with definitions such words as» home,» or «light,» or «music,» or to

meaning of such words clear to someone who had never himself experienced the realities to which they point, so it will always be impossible to replace with definitions such terms as «the grace
of God in Christ,» «peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,» or the great
story in which these phrases have their only possible context.
Here we have no other version to help us reconstruct the original form
of the parable, but the task is not difficult, since the tradition has sought to
make the parable edifying by
means of additions at the conclusion rather than by allegorizing the
story itself.
And it
means listening to the
stories of survivors, identifying our blind spots, learning from our mistakes, and vowing to do everything in our power to
make our churches and faith communities safer places to worship and grow together.
The images,
stories, and words
of Scripture so permeated my life that they gave
meaning and direction to my own
story and helped me
make sense
of things.
Everything begins to
make sense when we allow the
meaning of «legion» to dictate the shape
of the

story, I knew everyone in it and they knew me, Together we formed a community that tried — we did not succeed nearly enough — to mirror in this life what God's love for everyone
means practically.
In his famous short
story, «A Clean, Well - Lighted Place,» Ernest Hemingway
made a parody
of the Lord's Prayer, built on the Spanish word nada,
meaning nothingness: «Our nada who are in nada, nada be thy name...»
I'm counting on my friend Roger to bring his historical and theological insight to the conversation, which
means I'll be sharing a bit more from a personal perspective, incorporating my own
story with some
of your
stories to
make some general observations about what I think is happening in evangelicalism and why some
of it
makes me excited and some
of it causes concern.
A
story's
making the rounds today that acts as sort
of a Rorschach Test, in that everyone who hears it seems to have a different take on what it
means.
fred is like, «Yeah, but if you rearrange the days and
make «water»
mean «molten planets» and basically just mangle to hell and back the Werd
of Gawd then you have a
story that sort
of matches with the scientific model.»
When we read Genesis in an awareness
of what is to follow, we know that these
stories of origins were created and preserved through the centuries not so much to inform ancient Israel about the past as to inform about the present; not so much to speak
of what once was as to
make clearer what now is; not so much to show interest in what had gone before the history
of the people
of Israel as to
make that very history clear in its significance and
meaning.
What
makes it possible for revelation to have
meaning for us is that our awareness first
of all quietly indwells the particular or subsidiary words, symbols,
stories, habits etc.
of our biblically based culture.
Sage counsel, that, not least because
of Richard's tendency, born
of his native exuberance, to
make a good
story even better by whatever
means of embroidery were available, including numbers.
I think a lot
of you will resonate with my
story and the
stories of so many others who are trying to
make sense
of what it
means to be part
of the Church at this time in history.
But that's not the part
of this
story that's
meant to
make you all: how have I existed so long without THIS loaf in my life?
Come to think
of it, I'm not sure some
of those
stories aren't entirely
made up; I
mean it would
make sense to fabricate at least a few
of them to get the proper takeaway in the end and teach us teenagers a lesson, right?
It can only
mean two things: The media
made up the whole
story of Sanchez to mancity move collapsing on deadline day due to lack
of a replacement or, Wenger was indeed trying to sell Sanchez behind the board's back while Gazidis genuinely wanted to keep him.
A lot
of Arsenal fans did not expect us to get anything from today's away game against the Premier League leaders Man City, and that is how it turned out with De Bruyne, Aguero and Gabriel Jesus scoring to
make it a comfortable 3 - 1 scoreline in the end, but that did not tell the whole
story by any
means and Arsene Wenger will surely point to a couple
of key decisions that went the home side's way at crucial points
of the game.
However, the point I and PB were
making (to be fair PB probably explained it a lot clearer than I did) was that it is highly unlikely that those circumstances will come about
meaning that this
story that has appeared in the press is as close to a non-
story as you can get but it seems to have got plenty
of the natives on here overly excited, hence my straw - clutching comment.
The fact that this
story appeared on the eve
of City's game against Chelsea, and was splashed across the back pages
of The Independent by United apologist Ian Herbert (which in turn
meant that United's defeat at Stoke was pushed onto the inside pages) tells us all we need to know — that this was mischief
making in order to deflect the embarrassment
of yet another defeat for the football genius that is David Moyes so anyone attaching any real importance to it is getting giddy over something and nothing.
To help members
of the group create
meaning through telling and
making sense
of their birth
stories.
Easier said than done obviously, and I do not
mean you should ever laugh at your child, which is crazy -
making for them, but try to think
of who would appreciate this
story and think
of how you'll phrase it.
Living your life is one thing... but sharing your
story is one
of the things that
makes our lives have
meaning.
By this I
mean I managed to clean the kitchen, do three loads
of washing,
make lunch (even though it turned out to be toast — there's another
story there!)

I don't know why, but it sure
made my heart happy when the Grinch discovered the true
meaning of Christmas at the end
of the
story.
To
make a long
story short, the use
of words like «history» or «revolution» began to change at the end
of the 18th century (at least in Germany) and the
meaning of these words revealed a new outlook, or a new time (Neuzeit)-- what he calls «historical time».
The infamous Der Stürmer publishing house put out a book
of fables for children which included the very same tale from Aesop as Trump - «The Farmer and the Viper» — and, like Trump, they added a post script to the
story which
made it abundantly clear what it
meant:
Greater public visibility and scrutiny combined with a desire to tell their
story has
meant that the intelligence and security services have sought to publish «authorised» if not «official» histories, using academic historians who were
made members
of the parent organisation.
