school's extracurricular life is shaped by commitments coming from the model provided by paideia so that, for example, common worship is
made central to their common life and a high premium is placed on the
school being a residential
community.
Schools, which once came from and created
community, now teach students that they have to
make it on their own and at the expense of others.
Finally, the answers
made to these two types of questions will interconnect in complex ways with answers
made to the question of how the
school as
community is related to church
communities: Is the
school itself an ordered Christian congregation; is it an expanded version of the academic aspect of the work of ministerial leadership in a settled congregation; is it an agency for the extension education of practicing clergy?
Such a culture can
make LGB pupils and staff feel marginalised, and not valued or understood within the
school community.»
