Creative church
schools work hard to
make everything that occurs in the
classroom (worship, problems in interpersonal relationships, teaching - learning,
and so forth), laboratories in which religious truths can be brought to life
and experienced.
I can hardly bring my - self even to attend church any more, partly because of the all - male language
and symbolism of the services, partly because women are expected to stay in the kitchen
and the church
school classroom and the pew,
and partly because even the Bible seems to
make women inferior.
It may be an arrangement that factors out different aspects of the
school's common life to the reign of each model of excellent
schooling: the research university model may reign for faculty, for example, or for faculty in certain fields (say, church history, or biblical studies) but not in others (say, practical theology), while paideia reigns as the model for students, or only for students with a declared vocation to ordained ministry (so that other students aspiring to graduate
school are free to attempt to meet standards set by the research university model); or research university values may be celebrated in relation to the
school's official «academic» program, including both
classroom expectations
and the selection
and rewarding of faculty, while the
school's extracurricular life is shaped by commitments coming from the model provided by paideia so that, for example, common worship is
made central to their common life
and a high premium is placed on the
school being a residential community.
Furthermore, the
schools (in general) do not provide teachers with the adequate resources to perform their jobs effectively, such as teacher - requested books for their students; presentation items such as chalk, whiteboard markers, or projectors; basic
classroom organizational needs such as storage bins, filing cabinets with adequate files,
and functional modern computers with adequate software to
make results tabulating more efficient; or motivational equipment designed to reward students for good behavior, scores, or attitudes (grades simply are not enough of a motivational tool).
That creates more stress, which often feeds into behavior problems, which leads, in the
classroom, to stigmatization
and punishment, which keeps their stress levels elevated, which
makes it still harder to concentrate —
and so on,
and so on, throughout elementary
school.
What I've learned from my research is that in addition to
making sure our
classroom practices are engaging, we also need to talk to students directly about their beliefs about
school, helping them see how disengagement works against them,
and what engagement actually is.
When poor children grow up in an environment marked by stable, responsive parenting; by
schools that
make them feel a sense of belonging
and purpose;
and by
classroom teachers who challenge
and support them, they thrive,
and their opportunities for a successful life increase exponentially.

Our passion for the breakfast - in - the -
classroom model for
school breakfast is rooted in many things, including one point Ellen
made in «Kids Need Breakfast to Succeed», excerpted above — when breakfast is moved out of the cafeteria
and into the
classroom, participation goes up without fail (emphasis ours).

school my principal has declined to
make any modifications to practices like birthday cupcakes in the
classroom.
