The paintings you post are not really what I was thinking of (this doesn't relate to a judgment on quality) as the palette is limited
and the clear
figure ground contrast doesn't
make the painting very «complex» in my view (others, I'm sure, would see complexity in its subtlety).
What I am after is a dynamic spatial relationship between
figure and ground, or sometimes to charge the picture plane with impacted energy so as to
make it an undeniable, absolutely compelling image.
Among his student works were the paintings he had
made while studying with Hans Hofmann,
and in them, there is a free, gestural energy added to his interest in
figure /
ground.
There doesn't appear to be much snow on the
