But in the very moment of the rejection of God by
man, Christ - who is both fully human and fully divine —
accepts the rejection and turns to God praying for the
forgiveness of humanity «Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.»
The Christian Gospel becomes a support of the human struggle for the good, a prophetic criticism of the spirit of that struggle, and a final assertion that
man receives from God the
forgiveness which enables him both to know and to
accept his limitations.
