Kavli ENSI explores fundamental issues in energy science, using tools and techniques developed to study and
manipulate nanomaterials.
The Finalists are also creating technologies that revolutionize electronics and energy storage; developing the science of social and information networks; exploring novel methods to grow, analyze and
manipulate nanomaterials; and engineering metamaterials (materials that have properties not found in nature) that interact with electromagnetic and sound waves in unusual ways.
«An electron vortex beam could
manipulate nanomaterials just a few atoms thick,» says Verbeeck, which would help efforts to build ever - smaller electronic chips.

For several decades,
nanomaterials — matter that is so small it is measured in nanometers (one nanometer = one - billionth of a meter) and can be
manipulated at the atomic scale — have outperformed conventional materials in strength, conductivity and other key attributes.
Although this is not the first nanonecklace ever made, the new process provides a more general and controllable way of synthesizing such
nanomaterials — a useful development, because
manipulating materials on such tiny scales is a challenge.
The research, in which the CIC biomaGUNE and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid also participate, not only represents a record in optical quality in which billions of gold nanoparticles behave as a single one, but introduces a new way to
manipulate and improve
nanomaterials by employing lasers as chisels in the hands of a sculptor.
