There's a surprising amount of variation in the plastics used for
keycaps, and even more in terms of their production styles, shapes, and written legends, but the actual hardware itself is, well, plastic.
But between limited production capacity, a healthy secondary market, and the relatively niche nature of customized
keycaps, expanding your collection is probably going to include a heavy hit to your wallet.
First of all, the materials that go into
keycaps are not expensive.
These single
keycaps, usually designed in a standard 1 × 1 size, are handmade by sculptors, often from exotic materials and mixed mediums.
Odds are good that if you can even find
those keycaps later, they'll just be more expensive.
Scanning Amazon, you can find plenty of options under $ 30 or so, like this full - size set of doubleshot, backlight - friendly
keycaps in the popular PBT plastic for just eighteen bucks.
That doesn't necessarily hold true for
keycaps.
The online hubs of
the keycap community are the MechanicalKeyboards subreddit and the GeekHack forum.
The cheap
keycap sets listed above all come from manufacturers in China and other industrial centers, who aren't really interested in talking to you unless you want to order ten thousand units.
The list goes on: the timeless typeface on
each keycap, a beautiful LED volume readout, a mouse cable holder for clean routing, and (topping it all off) genuine Cherry MX switches.
The keyboard action is crisp and solid; the keyboard backlight can render the keys unreadable in some situations (thanks to white illumination and gray
keycaps); and the key layout is reasonable, albeit lacking in dedicated page navigation keys.
Many artisan
keycaps are created with elaborate casts and custom - painted, designed more for aesthetic appeal than functionality.

Scissor switches are technically mechanical in operation, but usually aren't implied when talking about mechanical keyboards, as they lack a spring action and don't support custom

keycap sets come in 108 - key or 104 - key sets and not 87 - key — so even if you're rehabbing an 87 - key keyboard, it helps to search for larger sizes too, provided they're the same layout.
With all that in mind, there's no one combination of features that'll work for everyone — only you can decide which
keycaps are right for you.
Chances are if it's a recent purchase, however, there's a very strong chance that it either uses actual Cherry MX switches or the stems are at least compatible, which means
keycap sets made for a Cherry MX keyboard will work with many other switches too.
Many keyboard companies also have small stores on their websites with original replacement and upgrade
keycap sets for purchase.
While the BlackWidow Tournament Edition Chroma V2 is compatible with Cherry MX
keycaps, it has a nonstandard bottom row — the Windows key, Fn key, and Menu key are all smaller than on a standard keyboard.
This layout makes buying replacement
keycaps unnecessarily difficult.
It's harder to find backlight - compatible
keycaps — the kind that allow the lights to shine through the letters — so replacement options for those will be more limited than for other keyboards.
If you prefer a cleaner design, don't care about programming complicated lighting patterns, or plan to customize your keyboard by changing
the keycaps, buy the tenkeyless Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro S RGB, available with Cherry MX Brown, MX Red, or MX Blue switches.
If you want to make sure you've got the data connections correct, plug the keyboard into your computer, put on the Scroll Lock or Num Lock
keycap, and see if you can get the LED indicator to light up with a press.
You should now have the following separate pieces: the data cable, the bottom half of the plastic shell, the top half, the steel plate, and all of your loose smaller pieces —
the keycaps, space bar stabilizer, and the plastic retention clip.
