A WATERY telescope has just released its debut
map of the sky, measuring for the first time how often black holes flicker on and off.
With the Aug. 14 detection of spacetime ripples, scientists were able to home in on the location of gravitational wave flinging black holes more precisely than ever before, illustrated in lime green on
a map of the sky.
Maps of the sky are described according to the season.
The complete results have yet to be released, but one of the Planck presentation slides showed a preliminary polarization
map of the sky.
From the first year's data, the COBE team were able to make
maps of the sky at each of the three frequencies sampled by the DMR.
The pulsar was identified by analysing fluctuations in gamma - ray
maps of the sky made using the Large Area Telescope aboard the Fermi Gamma - ray Space Telescope, which launched on 11 June.
Its first full
maps of the sky are expected in 2012.
NASA's recently launched GLAST gamma - ray observatory has made its first
map of the sky, and now the agency has given it a new name: the Fermi Gamma - ray Space Telescope.
In the broadest sense, the goal is to make the greatest - ever digital
map of the sky, according to Zeljko Ivezic, the University of Washington astronomer charged with coordinating LSST's science initiatives.
During that first summer, teacher teams used the 40 Foot to makes
maps of the sky around Cygnus A and Virgo A, and to measure the telescope's efficiency and beam shape.

The VISTA telescope, located in Chile, has a wide field
of view and extremely sensitive detectors that make it the world's largest telescope dedicated to
mapping the
sky.
They
mapped out how far star - forming regions were from the
sky, using the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Long Baseline Array
of telescopes, and calculating how far these war form Earth.

Last spring, Geha and Josh Simon, a colleague at Caltech, used the 10 - meter Keck II telescope on Hawaii's Mauna Kea to study the mass
of eight newly discovered satellite galaxies, detected over the last two years by the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey, an ongoing effort to make a detailed
map of a million galaxies and quasars.
Using these new data, a research team led by Charles L. Bennett

of cat in the Canary Islands in order to
map these cosmic wriggles all over the
sky.

LiDAR is a method
of mapping from the
sky: An airplane - mounted device sends a constant pulse
of laser light across a swath
of terrain; precise measurements
of how long it takes the emitted breams to bounce off surfaces are taken and translated into topographic data.
The Dark Energy Survey has now
mapped one - eighth
of the full

Astronomers working with the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey have used a 2.5 - meter telescope at the Apache Point Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico, to
map the location
of more than 930,000 nearby galaxies, determining the distance to each by how much the expansion
of the universe has stretched, or «redshifted,» the wavelength
of the galaxy's light.
