One reservoir for resistance genes where they can be exchanged among bacteria — and possibly end up in the food chain — is the sediment in
marine fish farms even when no antibiotics have been applied.

Some environmentalists and health enthusiasts have long criticized
farmed fish as a threat to natural
marine habitats.
For example, in the case of crops this is the living soil; for animals it is the
farm ecosystem; for
fish and
marine organisms, the aquatic environment.
An investigation has revealed the impact livestock
farming is having on
fish populations and the
marine environment off the coast of Peru and elsewhere in the southern Pacific.
The researchers looked specifically at the average
fishing revenue in 106 Alaskan communities for 10 years before and after 1989, a year when the North Pacific Ocean experienced a significant shift in productivity and abrupt changes in the composition of
marine food webs, while at the same time the global price for salmon dropped because of competition from
farm - raised
fish.
Some seafood choices are more ocean - friendly than others, based on factors such as whether a species is abundant and whether it is
fished or
farmed in ways that harm other
marine life.
Small
fish called wrasse painlessly peck sea lice from the skin of
farmed salmon, enabling salmon farmers rely less on powerful pesticides that can harm other
marine life.
Prior to this she studied at the University of St Andrews and Scottish Association for
Marine Science, assessing the extent of underwater noise pollution from Acoustic Deterrent Devices used at
fish farms on the west coast of Scotland.
