I really appreciate the
color interaction, the movement, the joy

marks and hues in continuous combination, and most
of all that you found a way to do something so specifically that I think many
of us have wanted to do when when looked at Rothko, Albers, Mitchell, or
other work.
Avery's daring
color juxtapositions and abstracted depictions

of marks, symbols and
colors - self - contained and relating to each
other within the boundaries
of the canvas.
Greenberg, art critic Michael Fried, and
others have observed that the overall feeling in Pollock's most famous works — his drip paintings — read as vast fields
of built - up linear elements often reading as vast complexes
of similar valued paint skeins that read as all over fields
of color and drawing, and are related to the mural - sized late Monets that are constructed
of many passages
of close valued brushed and scumbled
marks that also read as close valued fields
of color and drawing that Monet used in building his picture surfaces.

However, his rejection
of the expressive brushwork employed by
other abstract expressionists such as Clyfford Still and
Mark Rothko, and his use
of hard - edged areas
of flat
color, can be seen as a precursor to post painterly abstraction and the minimalist works
of artists such as Frank Stella.
Other hallmarks
of this new generation
of painters, according to Greenberg, were thinned - out paint, a lack
of an identifiable artistic
mark (as in Pollock's «drips» and «skeins»), a focus on saturated and intense
color, and a lack
of interest in spontaneity.
Beginning in the 1950s and 1960s, several Abstract Expressionist /
color field artists (notably: Barnett Newman,
Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, Adolph Gottlieb, Theodoros Stamos, Sam Francis, Ludwig Sander, Clyfford Still, Jules Olitski, and
others) explored motifs that seemed to imply monochrome, employing broad, flat fields
of colour in large scale pictures which proved highly influential to newer styles, such as Post-Painterly Abstraction, Lyrical Abstraction, and Minimalism.

colored monofilament and

The eleven artists juxtapose divergent approaches in conversation with each
other, reflecting on primal questions consuming artists over the millennia: Elliot Arkin's conceptual use

of artists; Babette Bloch's stainless steel reassessments
of nature and artistic precedent limn positives and negatives through light; Christopher Carroll Calkins's street photography captures moments
of under - the - radar narratives; Valentina DuBasky's acrylic and marble dust works on paper and plaster are a contemporary comment on the prehistory
of art; Gabriel Ferrer's performance - like in - the - moment sumi - ink drawings on handmade paper reflect on memory and personal narrative; Christopher Gallego's realist, pure light - filled oil painting elevates the ordinariness
of an artist's space to visual poetry; Ana Golici, in pergamano and collage, takes inspiration from 17th Century female naturalist, entomologist and botanical illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian to explore questions
of science, nature and objective truth; Emilie Lemakis's monumental amplification
of an ancient Greek krater employs scale to upend perceptions for the viewer's reconsideration;

of movement and stillness; the alchemy
of Michael Townsend's uncontrolled poured acrylic paintings equate the properties
of materials with the turbulence
of the universe; Jessica Daryl Winer's engagement with luminous

of a musical instrument.
