I don't read contracts from
vendors and I don't know the ins and outs of the
ebook market, DRM, first sale doctrine, etc..
It makes some sense that they would want out of the tablet
market for good, since other tablets can run the Nook app, but how would they be a competitive
ebook vendor if there are no dedicated e-readers compatible with their books?
All
eBook readers will come with heavy and draconian DRM (as mandated by the book agency) until one
vendor (also with heavy and draconian DRM) significantly corners the
market through a beautifully easy to use device, tied in store and large volume of works.
Somehow, no matter how
eBook is defined in developing
markets and how proficient the publishers / authors can develop and deliver the content based on their client's needs, it is easy enough to compare the quality of the
eBook to the commercially successful version distributed by all the major
vendors in the West.
Since
ebooks don't have to be
marketed to
vendors (all
ebook outlets will accept any old
ebook you want to toss their way as long as it's formatted properly), the ad budget needs to go where it should have been going all along: to introduce the book to prospective readers.
These changes will continue as publishers, libraries, and
vendors experiment with the growing
market of
ebooks.
To accommodate a growing

ebooks from a wide variety of

eBook vendors start to enter emerging
markets as they can see the stellar growth rate.
We have not seen a
market develop — at the customer or
vendor level — for illustrated titles or enhanced illustrated
ebooks.
