art history there involved the practice of historical artistic techniques.

Artist Alice Aycock — described as «a sculptor whose imagery is encyclopedic» in a 1990 New York Times article — will speak with The East Hampton Star culture writer
Mark Segal at 6 p.m.
on Saturday, October 1, 2016 in the final installation of the Amagansett Free Library's «
Art /

Drawn from various sources — referencing actual geographies and
histories alongside constructed and surreal imagery — the landscape for Todd takes
on a certain unreality, there are references to the fantastic, the layered
mark, the
art of the outsider, the obsessive, the tiered, the mad and the random and their conjunctions with the present, becoming a world of open diversity and retrospective reflection — a kind of performed cosmos where the world forms us as we form the world.

Loose and disjointed narratives involving the
histories and materiality of painting are found in several videos: Ragnheiour Gestsdottir's video «As If We Existed,» portrays the fictitious melodrama of a figurative painter working in Venice; Tameka Norris's «Purple Painting» incorporates makeup and food in a provocative video that, with few words, touches
on issues surrounding race, gender and the pressures of an
art historical canon; in Alex Hubbard's video «Hit Wave II,» a magician gives instructions for tricks, but the sounds and activities surrounding him allude to action painting with Hubbard in the background wearing a paint suit and creating gestural
marks with spray paint.
He wound up creating some of the most astonishing nature paintings in the
history of Western
art, swirling effusions of light and color that flirted with abstraction, sharply divided the critics of his era and have been cited as strong influences
on the Impressionists,
Mark Rothko and contemporary light sculptor James Turrell.
Keith received a master's degree in contemporary
art from University of California, Los Angeles, completing her thesis
on Los Angeles based artist
Mark Bradford and a bachelor's degree in
art history from Spelman College.
Bringing a more upbeat and casual approach to the realm of
art history and criticism, this 2015 winter conversation will bring experts
on Abstract Expressionism into one room to discuss the works of three pioneering artists: Joan Mitchell, Jackson Pollock, and
Mark Rothko.
«Nancy Lorenz: New Work» (closes
on Saturday) Operating in the gap between painting and the decorative
arts, Ms. Lorenz's latest efforts add to the
history of modernist abstraction by way of seemingly gestural
marks and lines fashioned from mother - of - pearl inlaid in surfaces of silver, white gold or palladium.

The eleven artists juxtapose divergent approaches in conversation with each other, reflecting
on primal questions consuming artists over the millennia: Elliot Arkin's conceptual use of web - based commerce spins an absurdist view
on the commodification of artists; Babette Bloch's stainless steel reassessments of nature and artistic precedent limn positives and negatives through light; Christopher Carroll Calkins's street photography captures moments of under - the - radar narratives; Valentina DuBasky's acrylic and marble dust works
on paper and plaster are a contemporary comment
on the prehistory of
art; Gabriel Ferrer's performance - like in - the - moment sumi - ink drawings
on handmade paper reflect
on memory and personal narrative; Christopher Gallego's realist, pure light - filled oil painting elevates the ordinariness of an artist's space to visual poetry; Ana Golici, in pergamano and collage, takes inspiration from 17th Century female naturalist, entomologist and botanical illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian to explore questions of science, nature and objective truth; Emilie Lemakis's monumental amplification of an ancient Greek krater employs scale to upend perceptions for the viewer's reconsideration;
Mark Mellon's bronzes address the oppositions of movement and stillness; the alchemy of Michael Townsend's uncontrolled poured acrylic paintings equate the properties of materials with the turbulence of the universe; Jessica Daryl Winer's engagement with luminous color and choreographic line reflects in visual resonance the sonic
history of a musical instrument.
