The aim of this study is to (a) document variations in the mental and physical health outcomes of
married and widowed respondents, (b) ascertain whether widowed persons who were previously in age heterogamous unions are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of widowhood, and (c) assess the extent to which differential selection, marital quality, and health practices
during marriage account for health disparities by marital status and spousal age
gap.
