One might think that the ability to sell acquired loot would combat this, but most of the time you need to recycle the loot for
materials with which to
upgrade your currently equipped
gear, make new traps or create crossbow bolts.
You will head off to the Blacksmith to see if you can
upgrade your
gear — if not then you will be setting items into your «watchlist» so the game alerts you when you have the correct
materials to
upgrade in the future.
It was this risk / reward
material grinding mechanic that has kept me coming back and, in my opinion, staves of the repetitive nature of the mission structure as there is such a vast array of
gear to acquire and then
upgrade that I always felt hungry for more.
You can hunt to
upgrade your personal
gear as seen in AC3, attack vessels on the open sea to gain
materials to
upgrade your own ship.

Rather than exchanging valuable ammo for goods and weapon
upgrades, you'll be scavenging junk on the service to turn into chemicals and
materials, allowing you to craft the
gear you would've previously been spending ammo for.

upgrade and develop weapons and ODM
gear, and to gain Wings of Freedom points to earn respect among your peers.
The
materials are not only used for forging new equipment or
gear, but they can also be used to
upgrade current weapons or items.
