Problems of Practice, I address that, in our Algebra 2 PBL Curriculum Writing Team, we found units where an authentic PBL
problem would restructure the unit so that students deepen their understanding of
math through a real - life
application.

However, word
problems are simply real - life
applications for
math concepts.
This project helps teachers better understand how to create and administer an interdisciplinary project that integrates the curriculum of
math, science, history, technology and media; shows students a link between classroom theory and practical
application; and motivates students to develop investigative skills, stimulate their curiosity, strengthen their
problem - solving abilities and build confidence in communicating their discoveries.
Developing automaticity for
math facts early in the academic career of NSCS students allows for greater ease of
applications as students progress through the
math curricula and focus on advanced concepts and
applications such as place value, time, money, story
problems and complex
problem - solving.
Instead, spending their time developing performance tasks — for example, in - depth writing tasks that require synthesizing information from multiple texts, or real - world
application problems in
math — can be useful professional development, as it gives them a way to learn about the standards and think about the most complex and demanding aspects of the Common Core.
Working closely with nine science teachers at participating schools, the Ingenuity Project designed the program to meet the potential of academically talented youth through curriculum - aligned challenges that include team - based, above - grade level
math skills, and the
application of technology, innovation and complex
problem - solving.
Partner investigations and
problem solving challenges are a daily part of
math class; and projects such as «Race for the Presidency,» where students strategize on campaign planning and fund management, develop computational skill through engaging, real - world

problems and answers, it's about true understanding.
