When the World Bank issued a report last fall that found that 60 percent of primary school children
in developing
countries were failing to achieve a basic proficiency
in reading, writing, and
mathematics, it exposed a so - called «learning crisis»
in global
education, one
in which children attend school for years but fail to learn.
In 1963 and 1964, the International Association for the Evaluation of
Education Achievement (IEA) administered the first of a series of
mathematics tests to a voluntary group of
countries.
Though most Americans believe that improving
mathematics and science
education is crucial to maintaining the
country's competitive advantage over other
countries in science and technology, few parents push their children to pursue careers
in those fields, a survey has found.
Yet there has been no appreciable improvement
in student achievement
in reading,
mathematics or science
in most of the
countries that have invested heavily
in ICT for
education.
