Though
educators and the public will never agree on precisely what «citizen competence» demands of schooling, the best strategies for teaching reading, or the most appropriate curriculum for cultivating critical thinking or a sense of justice, most will agree that schools that teach or
practice racism, deny boys and girls equal opportunities, or neglect
mathematics do not merit public support.
Dr. Leslie «s first priority was to change the prevailing culture of low expectations among
educators in the district; his second was to improve student achievement through increased rigor, alignment of state standards to classroom
practices, and implementation of
mathematics standards higher than those set by the state.
Drawing on research and my lived experiences as an
educator, I discuss mindsets and
practices teachers can develop to assuage the assault against belonging and become proactive in restoring equity and opportunity in
mathematics classrooms that serve historically disenfranchised students.
Engaging Students in Math Practices — The
Mathematics Practice section of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) help
educators ensure that learners at all grade levels reach determined levels of expertise in
mathematics.
In his review of the scientific research on
mathematics instruction, Grover Whitehurst, the director of the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Educational Sciences, rightly points out that
educators should be wary about basing instructional
practices on potentially unsubstantiated translations of study findings (2003).

mathematics teacher
educators.
