To date, our work using the distributed perspective has demonstrated the ways that
leaders co-construct leadership activity, how leadership practice connects and fails to connect with instructional change, why teachers heed or ignore the guidance of school
leaders, and how leadership is practiced differently in different school
subjects (e.g.
mathematics versus language arts).
A North East college has joined forces with top academics and business
leaders across Europe to encourage more women into science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM)
subjects.

mathematics of students of teacher
leaders with average student scores at the district and state levels.
At the same time, she facilitated ongoing improvement efforts mandated at the district level prior to her appointment (curriculum writing, implementation of a commercial
mathematics program)-- collaborating with grade team and
subject leaders, specialist teachers, and trainers provided by the externally developed
mathematics program.
The theme of hands - on activities contributing to the development of teacher
leader knowledge was found in studies in
mathematics and science and all grade levels, indicating that this was considered an appropriate strategy for a teacher
leader preparation programs regardless of the
subject area or grade focus.
Few of the studies were designed to investigate the role of
subject area (i.e.
mathematics or science) in the shared work of teacher
leaders and principal, indicating an area for future research.
Program
leaders noted that the STEM PLC's purpose will determine whether membership should be limited to teachers of only one
subject (
mathematics or science), or include teachers of both
subjects.
In Manno and Firestone (2006), teacher
leaders with content expertise (defined as a degree and certification in
mathematics or science) were found to be better equipped to lead
subject - related school improvement than teacher
leaders without such expertise.
