The consequence of the conception of
matter as itself substance was an ineluctable metaphysical dualism, which had been explicitly accepted by Basso and Galileo and was then systematically developed by Descartes.
In my previous lecture I criticized the concept of
matter as the substance whose attributes we perceive.
Not exact matches
The study of history is arid and incomplete unless it is understood
as a work about (and by) individual human beings — and, moreover, a story whose
substance and manner of telling are
matters of moral significance.

For Whitehead the polarity of «physical» and «mental» pole is primarily intended to supersede Cartesian dualism that posits spirit and
matter as separate
substances.
It usually refers to the real
substance or essential nature of something (though what those terms precisely mean is a
matter of philosophical discussion); so Hebrews 11:1 is more getting at faith
as providing
substance to a future we hope for — that their hope for the future, through faith, becomes a present reality to affect their actions.
Zod's apologia, «every action I take, no
matter how violent or how cruel, is for the greater good of my people,» would be out of place in a Trump speech
as a
matter of style, but not of
substance.
This apparent incapacity of Aristotelian
substances to enter into intrinsic relations with one another seems to have struck Whitehead
as distinctive of
matter or stuff, hence to lend itself readily to the viewpoint of materialistic mechanism.

as both static and passive, hence
as lending itself immediately to the notion of an inert stuff or

So if Santayana is not an «event ontologist» like Whitehead, it is not because he thinks ordinary continuants or «primary

Hence the determinable element in a composite

matters to us here is that these virtues provide a general definition of civility — of the stance of a person who,
as far
as possible, is deliberately and carefully related (attentively and openly, veraciously and responsibly) to all members of the human race, so far

substance of a resolutely critical and independent personality.
Bowel movements are even more likely to cause a rash,
as fecal
matter contains dangerous
substances that can be highly irritating.
