Judd was particularly taken by the notion that art no longer had a representational purpose; he maintained that what
mattered in a work of art was its own formal qualities - shape, color, surface, volume.

Yet it also goes deeper: as
in Ann Hui's equally compelling The Golden Era, the film respects the mystery
of the creative process, the obscure correspondences between life and
art, whether or not it is important to like a writer to appreciate his / her
work — but, ultimately, why it
matters for public freedom that writers should be allowed to misbehave
in peace.

Among the findings: (1)
art activities can be integrated into classroom content and used to encourage rehearsal - type activities (such as songs) that incorporate relevant subject
matter, (2) incorporating information into story, poem, song, or
art form may place the knowledge
in context, which can help students remember it, especially if the students are creating
art that relates subject
matter to themselves, (3) through artistic activities like writing a story or creating a drawing, students generate information they might otherwise have simply read, which will very likely lead to better long - term retention
of that information, (4) physically acting out material, such as
in a play, helps learners recall information, (5) speaking words aloud results
in better retention than reading words
in silence, (6) increasing the amount
of effort involved
in learning new information (such as being asked to discern meaning from an ambiguous sentence or to interpret a
work of art) is positively associated with its retention, (7) emotionally charged content is easier to remember than content linked to events that are emotionally neutral, and (8) information presented as pictures is retained better than the same information presented as words.

While his
work bears similarities to that
of American abstract expressionist painters such as Mark Rothko, Jules Olitski and Barnett Newman, Hoyland was keen to avoid what he called the «cul - de-sac»
of Rothko's formalism and the erasure
of all self and subject
matter in painting as championed by the American critic Clement Greenberg.1 The paintings on show here exhibit Hoyland's equal emphasis on emotion, human scale, the visibility
of the
art - making process and the conception
of a painting as the product
of an individual and a time.

Women had many obstacles to face
in terms
of recognition: their artwork was often relegated to merely «craft» or «handiwork» status; they had difficulty getting the schooling and training they needed for fine
arts; they often did not receive credit for the
work they did, with much
of it attributed to their husbands or male counterparts, as
in the case
of Judith Leyster; and there were social restrictions as to what was accepted as women's subject
matter.
Architects by trade, Benjamin Aranda and Chris Lasch, have found a sweet spot

The artist generates the subject

To include the
work of some artists who have not generally been associated with institutional critique per se through its lens is to insist that their
work be evaluated not only for its profound commitment to criticality and to bringing largely suppressed (or repressed) aspects
of our society into public view but also for the ways
in which it then insists that the institutions
of art contend with these
matters.
