I hope I'm not exhausting you with posts about the new

So when it comes to improving
school meals, health advocates logically want to remove the items that win out over healthier fare: nixing sugary chocolate milk, for example, so kids have to take white milk, or making sure pizza isn't offered

She asked what might happen if parents organized a boycott of objectionable

The remaining 32,000 students who rely

For the last four and a half years, I've served

The authors of The
School Food Plan recognised that the workforce is charged with a complex challenge and responsibility: to serve the nation's children healthy
meals that taste great and can compete with the high street, all
on a tight budget and timescales each
day.
However, as was expected, the interim final rule states that an item sold
on a cafeteria snack bar line is exempt from all of the nutrition standards we've been discussing above, so long as those foods are «sold

meal, or sold
on the following

The
meals are often quite inventive and «grown - up», even though they do occasionally get burger and chips or chicken nuggets. And everything is cooked
on site, served
on real plates with real cutlery, but actual lunch ladies... That said, it's costly: I pay 4.40 $ (about the same in dollars, I guess) per
meal per
day, so that makes just over 35 $ a week (no

Increased demand for vegetarian

days, but also that they are serving vegan lentil chili Frito pie that has a 25 percent take rate.
But when I asked this question yesterday at our Food Services Parent Advisory Committee meeting, I learned that not only does stigma remain a real issue at some
schools, there's now a troubling, modern -
day twist
on the problem:
on some campuses, hapless kids standing in the federally reimbursable
meal line are having their pictures taken by other students» cell phones, with the photos then uploaded to Facebook and / or texted around the
school along with disparaging messages about the child's economic status.
While the proposed fat and sugar limits are a start, I prefer a rule that ties a la carte offerings to the

In New York,

This USDA initiative targets «competitive foods,» which are all foods and beverages sold to students

Specifically, the SNA is asking to: keep the level of whole grains in the total number of grain foods served at 25 %; avoid further reductions in sodium; eliminate the requirement that kids take fruit or a vegetable with their

day.
What the new Q & A does not tell parents, but which I revealed in my first post
on the issue, is that Chinese - processed chicken in any percentage may be used in
school supper programs (which will feed an estimated 21 million children by 2015), in
meals served by
day care centers and even by
schools for breakfasts and lunches — but in the latter two cases, only if it comes to pass that Chinese - processed chicken becomes reliably cheaper than domestically processed chicken.
