When they speak of «effective teachers,» what they
mean is teachers whose
students produce higher
scores on standardized tests every year, not teachers who inspire their
students to love learning.
To account for the limitations of the
tests, Louisiana allows an exception if
students score between one and a half and two standard deviations above the
mean on three separate
tests: the IQ
test and the
standardized math and English exams.
To be labeled gifted in Louisiana, by and large,
students must
score at least two standard deviations above the
mean on a
standardized reading and math
test chosen by the district or
on an intelligence
test (two standard deviations above the
mean translates to a
score of 130
on the IQ
test and is near the 98th percentile).
This
means that similar
students (i.e.
students that
score similarly
on state
standardized tests) have been making more progress (
score better the next year than
students with similar
scores in the past) in Denver than Boulder across all
student groups.
Building
on research presented during the Kinder Institute's October KIForum, Reardon's working paper uses a measure of educational opportunity
meant to track
student growth from grades three through eight utilizing
standardized test scores for roughly 45 million
students in more than 11,000 school districts across the country.
Within the U.S., how school performance is measured is with
standardized test scores meant to indicate
student achievement, so whether or not a school is considered to be successful or failing at educating
students is based
on how
students at that school
score.
If the announcement is as impressive as suggested, it would
mean that the leadership of Connecticut's teacher unions have finally moved 180 degrees from the position they held
on January 25, 2012 when the CEA and AFT joined with the other members of Governor Malloy's Performance Evaluation Advisory Council (PEAC) to approve the so - called «teacher evaluation framework» that inappropriately and unfairly mandates that
student's
standardized test scores be a major factor in the teacher evaluation process.
But when the researchers compared California schools districts, based
on their English learners»
standardized test scores and mastery of English proficiency, and then followed up with site visits and interviews with administrators, they discovered that many of the most successful districts viewed the Common Core as a
means to higher achievement for these
students, and used strategies in line with its goals to achieve their good results.
After all — if accountability to a classroom teacher
means they are at risk of losing their job if
students perform poorly
on standardized tests — then what is the reason
scores of library media specialists are losing their jobs across the country?
