Before we see how this analysis of love leads to a new consideration of
the meaning of agape there is a complementary side of the ethical problem to be faced.
It is not that we discover
the meaning of agape by going into the depths of the self; but that we discover in the depths of the self a hunger born of the self's own loves which only agape can satisfy.

Not exact matches
It is not possible simply to collate hesed and
agape into a single understanding, even though they are closely interrelated — and even though the New Testament language
of agape clearly owes more to the
meanings of love in the Old Testament than to the ordinary
meanings of the word in the Hellenistic environment.
Moreover, Paul seems to be quite capable
of taking certain words from the culture
of the time, and packing new
meaning into the word (such as
agape, mysteries, and theopnuestos, to name a few).
Following Jesus
means subverting every claim to truth, authority, and consolation that could interfere with a life
of self - emptying
agape.
What I
mean is this: In every person there is something which claims my concern, reverence, personal involvement and acknowledgment
of value — my «
agape.»
Love is constantly suggesting
means to raise justice to higher levels
of purity by the inspiration
of agape.
Now, do yourself a favor, go and reread what I wrote about the context and
meaning of the word
agape as the Lord uses it in Matthew 5 and then check the text for yourself.
The Church is not the only group in which man is moved by
agape and seeks its leading; but it is the one community which in accepting
agape as the
meaning of its existence places itself squarely under the judgment
of the love which seeks one redeemed humanity in the Kingdom
of God.
It
means that those who recognize the
agape of God in the historical revelation can be thankful that it has come to them there, while they remember that it does not give them an exclusive possession
of the truth.

In fact, as somebody has pointed out, Nygren's God
of sheer

meaning he gives that word, is a moral reflection
of the untouched, unmoved, self - sufficient deity as ens realissimum — note the neuter gender — which Christian theologians have tried to join with the living, loving, caring God
of the Hebrew - Christian scriptures — and have failed.
As you will recall, Nygren insists that in God there is no eros (the Greek word, by the way, for what I have been calling «desire», which significantly also in Greek
means «love»); in God there is only
agape, which Nygren interprets to
mean the love which gives without regard either to the value
of the recipient or the urgency on the part
of the giver to receive a returning love.
Niebuhr was concerned that
agape not be reduced simply to achievable good acts that liberals suggest as the
meaning of love.
