It centered in Luther's discovery of
the meaning of justification or forgiveness, and its symbol proved to be Luther, storming about his room in Wittenberg, cursing the God who demands righteousness of men.

justification.»
Only learning
of this kind can truly be called liberal, and only it can provide a context
of ample
justification, motives, and
meaning for vocational pursuits.
Religion is described as the «moral sanction», the «solemn completion», and the «universal ground for consolation and
justification» for this world.12 This
means religion is an integral part
of this perverted world, and not simply the perverted consciousness belonging to it.
Justification is central to the scriptural account
of salvation, and its
meaning has been much debated between Protestants and Catholics.
Why believe in real truth - that actually confronts the deep multiplicity
of what it
means to be human, and actually change your life - when you can believe in your own shallow truth that simply adds to one's self -
justification and denial
of reality, and remain the way you are?
Justification by faith in the realm
of justice
means that we will not regard the pressures and counterpressures, the tensions, the overt and covert conflicts by which justice is achieved and maintained as normative in the absolute sense; but neither will we ease our conscience by seeking to escape from involvement in them.

means to live the Christian life

There is an earthquake going on right now in theology surrounding the issues

of a theological opinion (which, yes,
means an explanation
of interpretation and
justifications thereof
of particular passages).
That claim is challenged by the reality that the overwhelming majority
of Christians in the world, who are in the broadest sense the ecclesia, have never heard
of «
justification by faith alone,» and most who have heard
of it have not the foggiest notion
of what it

But once a pertinent change

of a particular man is ethically unjustified — even though it may have some political
justification as society's best

of those who have been victimized by the «guilty party.
Ultimately,
of course, the real
justification for dismissing the significance
of the lie is that the end justifies the
means.
Justification by grace signifies God's unconditional, unmerited, radical acceptance
of the whole person: God, the Cosmic Lover, graciously embraces not just a person's disembodied spirit but the whole fleshly self — the
meanings of which theology is only beginning to explore.
God justifies us by beginning a new history; therefore every attempt at self -
justification violates the
meaning of love.
Perry Miller once said that Protestantism has always had difficulty in preventing the doctrine
of justification by faith from being interpreted as
meaning justification by ignorance.
The concepts «morality» and «moral development,» however much
meaning and
justification they may have in other connections, are excluded for Jesus, because he sees man in the crisis
of decision, and because for him the concepts «good» and «bad» depend upon the will
of God.
The
meaning of life, the
justification of sacrificial love, the redemption
of tragedy, the meaningfulness
of history, and the resolution
of whatever paradoxes there be, are «now.»
Or will we use something
meant to set us free as
justification of material gain?
I especially love how she says the following as if it's
meant to be a
justification of her position: «Biblical patriarchs and kings violate nearly every one
of these commandments.»
(To what extent is this temptation the obverse
of a temptation, characteristic
of a straight, middle - class life style, to become all - responsible as a
means of self -
justification?)
However, this does not
mean that Luther taught a «Doctrine
of Justification by Print Alone,» to quote A. G. Dickens» sardonic quip.
