We learned that
meaningful student voice must: be inclusive, be woven into the daily fabric of school, target substantive issues, involve asking and listening by all parties, and lead to constructive action.
As part of the effort to do just that, the director of the Prichard Committee Student Voice Team and I recently visited advanced fourth graders in Amanda Klare's Beechwood Elementary class in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky to facilitate a conversation about
meaningful student voice.
In the 2013 - 2014 school year, CFJ student members began working on ensuring
meaningful student voice in the implementation of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) in our East Side High School District (ESHSD).
We learned that
meaningful student voice must: be inclusive, be woven into the daily fabric of school, target substantive issues, involve asking and listening by all parties, and lead to constructive action.
The panel touched on school climate and culture, what it means to have true and
meaningful student voices embedded in your school, and how education truly frees students from negative situations.
