Simple, online, practice - friendly numerical rating scales are
available and are slowly helping to improve recognition of feline pain.13 One such scale has been developed (but not yet validated) by Colorado State University.13 A currently validated assessment
tool is the UNESP - Botucatu multidimensional composite pain scale,
available here.14, 15 The Glasgow Feline Composite Measure Pain Scale: CMPS — Feline (CMPS - F) has been described as «a valid scale for the
measurement of acute pain in cats [that] heralds a new era in the recognition and management of acute pain in cats.»
It's up to all of us to incorporate
measurement as an element in marketing project planning and costing up front, and implementing these
available tools more rigorously.
