Where the notification adjustment menu used to pop up, you'll now see a menu for
adjusting media volume instead.
Use this slider to increase the number of
media volume steps — the lower you set the slider, the more volume steps there will be.
When you press either volume button on the headset, it changes the overall
media volume on the phone — this is even indicated by a visual notification, like in the screenshot below.
If media is playing, then the volume rocker will
adjust media volume — but only after the first few seconds played at the previous volume level.
For example, entering these two commands at the end will double the number of in - call volume steps and
media volume steps respectively.

So if you'd rather have the volume rocker control
media volume by default to avoid getting caught off guard by a blaring video link, a simple app from developer Tom W has you covered, and it doesn't even require root access.

Media Volume Sync disabled on the S8, you control the phone volume on the phone and the headset volume on the headset.
But the trouble is, they control notification and ringtone volume by default, and will only adjust

The settings for Silent and Ring are pretty straightforward — just a couple of switches for you to toggle vibration and
media volume on or off.
In order to adjust
media volume when media isn't playing, you have to tap the down arrow next to the ringer volume slider that appears at the top of the screen to see the option.
From there, go to «Change step volume» and use the slider to increase the number of
media volume steps.
Using Rocker Locker is incredibly simple — if you want your volume rocker to
control media volume by default, simply tap the «Enable» button in the app's main menu.
Adjust volume — Go to the homescreen, hit settings (the icon in the lower right that looks like a wheel), then sound and display, then
adjust media volume.
