The medial luxating patella, commonly called «trick knee,» is an extremely common problem in toy breed dogs.

Patellar luxation can affect either or both legs.The most common occurrence of
luxating patella is the
medial presentation in small or miniature dog breeds.
Some veterinarians believe that a dog whose
patella rides too high on its leg (
patella alta) is at higher risk of
medial patellar luxation (MPL)(ref) and that those that have
patellas that ride too low (
patella baja) is more likely to
luxate laterally (to the outside).
When there is a
luxating patella, the kneecap
luxates or pops out of place either in a
medial position (to the inside of the knee) or lateral position (to the outside of the knee) position.
Most of the time a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a
luxating patella has a
medial luxation which can be caused by a traumatic accident or it can be genetic in origin.

The tendency to
luxate to the
medial side causes a transient lameness, at least until the
patella returns to its normal position, if it is able to.
In severe cases, the
patella stays
luxated and rides along the
medial surface of the femur.
