To examine the effects of these
variables on collective sense of efficacy, we used a regression
model, entering the key
variables identified above in a first step, and then entering potential
mediators: school size, the school level (elementary / secondary), percentage of non-white students, percentage of students in poverty, and the individual «s position (principal or assistant principal).
We used the function (
MODEL INDIRECT) in Mplus version 7.2 (Muthén and Muthén, 1998 — 2012) and obtained bootstrap confidence intervals for the effect of the independent
variables (parenting and SES risk exposure) on the outcome
variable (young adult self - reported health) through the
mediator (methylation index) using 1000 replicates to assess the bias - corrected 95 % confidence intervals for the IE (Hayes, 2009).
In the following
models, then, collectivism was the independent
variable, parental influence and family allocentrism were the
mediators, and commitment, passion, and parent - child discrepancy were the respective dependent
variables.
In order to extend these results, a mediation
model was also tested on the association between secure - preoccupied nation attachment and flourishing, with heritage culture identification as a
mediator; inclusion of this
variable resulted in a decrease in the association between secure - preoccupied nation attachment and flourishing, from b =.36 (t (192) = 2.74, p =.01), to b =.26 (t (186) = 2.09, p =.04).
A
model with cognitive efficiency as a
mediator variable was tested using hierarchical multiple regression analysis, with a bootstrapping procedure to examine indirect effects.
Fourth, the dependent
variable (depressive symptoms) was regressed on both the independent
variable (marital status) and the
mediator (social ties) in
Models 5 — 7.
Third, the dependent
variable (depressive symptoms) was regressed on the
mediator (social ties) in
Models 2 — 4.
In
Models 5 — 8, the
variables related to social ties were added to
Model 1 as the fourth step in regressing depressive symptoms (dependent
variable) on both marital status (independent
variable) and social ties (
mediator).
The
model that best accounted for this relation included the mediating
variables of rumination, negative emotion, and emotional unclarity (these authors did not include emotional suppression or thought suppression as possible
mediators).
Coffey, Hartman, and Fredrickson (2010) used structural equation
modeling to examine a number of possible
mediators of the relations between two facets of mindfulness, attention and acceptance, and the dependent
variables of flourishing and psychological well - being.
The
model is symmetric in the structural
variables with externalizing and anxiety symptoms as
mediators of the relationship between gender and adherence outcomes.
The following criteria are necessary for mediation: (I) the predictor (family functioning) should be significantly associated with the outcome (HbA1c), (II) the predictor should be significantly associated with the
mediator (adherence), (III) the
mediator should be associated with the outcome
variable (with the predictor accounted for), and (IV) lastly, the addition of the
mediator to the full
model should reduce the relation between the predictor and criterion
variable.
Pazdera et al. (2013) conducted a multiple mediation
model which included CSA as predictor, parenting sense of competence and depression as
mediators, and parenting stress and maltreatment behaviour as outcome
variables.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the intervening
variables for adult attachment and marital satisfaction by using caregiving and sexual intimacy
variables as
mediators based on adult pair bonding relationship
model of Shaver & Hazan.
