More and more women and families are turning away from the currently - standard hospital
birth and back to having their babies
at home the way we have for most of history, choosing to go to hospitals and obstetricians only if there is some specific
medication
Whether your ideal
birth is in a large hospital with an epidural or
medication free in a
birth center or even
at home, you want a provider that understands your wants / needs and aligns closely with your ideal
birth plan.
For women that are typical clients of IMG who
birth at home, or even those in other settings who do not want
medication, I feel this is a reasonable method to initiate or enhance labor contractions.

The problem I see is that direct entry midwives in the United States will often attend
home births that do not fit these criteria; while insisting that
home birth is
at least as safe as hospital
birth, many will attend twin
births, breech
births,
births after 41 weeks,
births of women who have pre-existing or pregnancy - induced disease,
births after two or more previous caesarean sections, and
births of women whose labor has been jump - started rather than begun spontaneously (whether by herbs, prolonged nipple stimulation, the breaking of her water, or illicit use of
medications).
Honestly, giving
birth at a hospital with pain
medication is far more about keeping a mother comfortable than an all natural
birth at home is.
Whether we are
at home or
at the
birth center, emergency
medications are available and a hospital transport plan is in place should it become necessary.
Statistically speaking, it was pretty likely that that we'd both survive without major complications, whether or not I chose to have any pain
medication and whether I gave
birth at home,
at a
birth center, or
at a hospital.
