Mentoring is an integral part of the equation for
young associates transitioning into senior
associates and then to partners.
One proven method of managing and
mentoring younger lawyers that has worked well in many midsize law firms is to set up a system whereby the
associates work closely with several partners and, at the same time, are under the control of a single supervising partner.
Properly
mentoring younger partners and
associates will clearly identify whether their skills, in defined criteria excel; if so, they should be trained and encouraged to provide leadership in those areas.
This includes time spent
mentoring younger lawyers or working on the firm's education, articling or
associate development committees.
To that end,
young associates are given early responsibility, strong
mentoring and opportunities to shine on matters as soon as they walk in the door.
