It is further shown that the warm phase of the AMO corresponds to a strengthening of the Atlantic
meridional overturning
circulation (AMOC) and a weakening of the Atlantic subtropical
cell (STC), which both induce an anomalous northward current in the TNA subsurface ocean.
Though more work is needed to fully understand these long term trends, especially what happens from the mid-1970's, it is likely that changes in ocean
circulation involving some combination of the Atlantic
meridional overtuning
circulation and the subtropical
cells are required to explain the observations.
Some of the
circulation patterns are involved in the
meridional energy flow, such as the Hadley
cell and the Ferrel
cell.
