I am in basic agreement with Calvinists that there is no good work by which a person may earn or
merit eternal life from God.
Yet despite the fact that repentance refers to a turning from sin and turning toward obedience, this does not in any way mean that repentance helps us earn or
merit eternal life.
I also agree that we can not do anything good to gain, earn, or
merit eternal life.
The difference between faith and works, of course, is that while the latter are «works» and no one can have enough works to earn or
merit eternal life, faith is not a work, is not meritorious, and does not help a person earn or gain eternal life.
The reason I finally rejected Total Depravity, however, is not because I believe that people can «save themselves» or earn their way into heaven, or do anything good to
merit eternal life.
First, as sinful, unregenerate human beings, people can do nothing good for God, nothing to earn or
merit eternal life, and nothing which might put them in God's good graces.

Merit and virtue restored; Makes our prayers and works more efficacious; We benefit from the priest's prayers and penance; More fruitful participation in other sacraments; Sacrament of healing; Strengthens our faith; Cultivates hope; Increases charity; Fosters growth in humility and in self - knowledge; Helps to form our conscience; Brings psychological benefits; Prevents us from falling into more serious sins; Improves our prayer
life; Source of spiritual direction; Helps us becomesaints.
The disciples needed to follow Christ and leave their old
lives in order to gain
eternal life but I do nt believe that there was any
merit for them in this.
So too we need to leave our old
lives through repentance and baptism to gain
eternal life but their is no
merit for us in this.
The staple of LCMS preaching was the three - point sermon: you have sinned and by that sin
merited eternal separation from God; Christ died to save you from the consequences of your sins; you should in grateful response strive to
live in obedience to God's will.
