Scripture reading that morning came
from 1 Corinthians 12, and at First Presbyterian Church Muscatine, was read

Message, an idiomatic translation by Eugene Peterson:
«The assumptions often made are that
Scripture should have no tensions and that any such tensions are not real but introduced
from the outside, namely, by scholarship hostile to Christianity... It is a great irony that both the critical and evangelical options (as distinct
from the Jewish model) take part in the same assumption: God's word and diversity at the level of factual content and theological
messages are incompatible.»

From my own peculiar point of vantage I sense that many Christians may be missing something — a

Scripture, in the words of the church fathers, and in the deliberations at Vatican II — without which our attempts at interfaith dialogue will be of little or no avail.
The depiction of Jesus as a Cynic philosopher with no concern about Israel's destiny, no connection with the concerns and hopes that animated his Jewish contemporaries, no interest in the interpretation of

message of God's coming eschatological judgment is - quite simply - an ahistorical fiction, achieved by the surgical removal of Jesus
