The latter
metaphor comes alive for us when we recognize that the Palestinian sycamine tree was notably deep rooted; the Mishnah says: «A tree may not be grown within twenty - five cubits of a cistern, or within fifty cubits if it is... a sycamore (shikmah) tree» (B. B. 2.11).
