On catastrophic
methane degassing: Shakova and Semiletov have proposed a mechanism — the destabilisation of the permafrost cap overlying large methane hydrate deposits that contain a high proportion of free gas.
[Response: Not to belittle the concern, but
this methane degassing would probably take place on a time scale which is longer than the methane lifetime.
Such a strong acceleration of
methane degassing from the Arctic would result in measurably higher concentrations of methane in the high northern latitudes.
The models of destabilization are largely based on variants of diffusive heat transport, but the state of understanding of slope avalanches and other more exotic release mechanisms is rather poor — and even if it turns out that rapid
methane degassing isn't in the cards, you still do have to worry about those several trillion metric tons of near - surface carbon and how secure they are.

Others are a-biological, such as ocean
degassing from the lower solubility of CO2 in warm versus cool water and also melting of
methane clathrates (ice with trapped
methane, which is more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas.
For example, an aerating weir at Petit Saut reservoir was installed to optimize CH4
degassing immediately below the dam to avoid problems associated with
methane - oxidation - induced hypoxia (Abril et al. 2005).
