reach adulthood in the veins of the pulmonary artery and lungs, where they reproduce and release
microfilaria into the blood for the mosquito to ingest and pass on.
It is important to realize that such puppies will not develop adult heartworms or heartworm disease from these
microfilariae; in order for a heartworm to
reach adulthood, it must be passed through a mosquito.
These
microfilaria «mature» in the mosquito until they
reach the infective larval stage.
