I firmly believe the future will see more and more authors (new,
midlist trad - pubbed, as well as veteran bestsellers) going indie, in part or whole.

midlist author (typically) makes more money.
I would submit that
trad publishing could do worse than adopt the Baen Free Library concept for ebooks and to allow bookstores to «remainder»
midlist authors for one or two copies to local libraries.
