I've lost count of the many times I've written about babies who died completely preventable deaths because the
homebirth midwives involved were grossly incompetent.
The North American Registry of Midwives provided a rare opportunity to study the practice of a defined population of direct entry
midwives involved with home birth across the continent.
I meet other midwife researchers and
other midwives involved in population health (It's nice to know I'm not the only one!)
A website I found that greatly disturbed me was run by a midwife who followed the trials
of midwives involved in home birth deaths.
This story also hits close to home as
the midwives involved are ones that I know well and who are still practicing.
To my knowledge, not a single one of
the midwives involved in these deaths was ever investigated by any homebirth midwifery organization, either in North Carolina or nationally.
Largely this was by or at the initiation of
the midwives involved.
If the family had not pursued a medical malpractice lawsuit against
the midwife involved, they would be forced to bear this huge financial burden themselves.
