It's not enough just to earn
mileage awards from credit cards — you need to
make the most of the miles you earn.
But with airlines increasing the number of miles needed for many
awards, and reducing the number of seats they
make available for the lowest
mileage levels, these programs have lost some of their value.
However, the ability to earn over 30,000 elite qualifying miles and 100,000 redeemable
award miles (per person) through Alaska
Mileage Plan
made it seem more reasonable and are worth, in my view, about $ 4,000 total.
If the airline thinks it can sell those seats for cash, it's much less likely to release the seats for cheap
mileage redemptions —
making award space extremely limited on the most popular travel dates.
The
Mileage Plan
award program has some very unique and useful features but also some restrictions that can
make their miles more difficult to use than other programs.
Now that Alaska is sure the deal will go through, they have announced more details on how the two airlines will operate going forward, what changes will be
made to elite benefits, and how the
mileage accrual and
award tickets will work.
To
make that deal even sweeter, the card qualifies you for reduced
mileage awards flights.
Airlines continuously
make fewer
award seats available at the lowest
mileage levels.
The
mileage rates in the
award chart
make it possible to achieve values of over two cents per mile.
Mileage will be
awarded for reservations
made prior to that date, for future dates, including dates, before and after May 31, 2018.
Although their
mileage rates for
award tickets to Europe are not the absolute best you can find, United has several things going for them: they
make it easy to redeem miles, they don't add fuel surcharges, and their program is a good place to get started with miles and points.

mileage table price for the season during which the trip is
made.
and those are the exact
mileage requirement American Airlines used to charge before it began systematically devaluing the AAdvantage program — American now charges 57,500 miles and 85,000 miles respectively for those

To
make it simple, when looking for
Mileage Plan
awards on LATAM, always looks for flights operated by LAN (LA).
But American Airlines» «Reduced
Mileage Awards» is a perk provided for their card holders that just might
make paying that annual fee worth it.
Also, most airlines will highly restrict the number of
award seats
made available at the lowest
mileage levels, and offer many more options if you are willing to pay more miles.
What
makes this booking option really fantastic is that Alaska
Mileage Plan allows you to book a stopover on one - way
award tickets.
If you have Flying Blue miles and are thinking about booking an
award,
make sure you look up the post-June 1
award rate with their
mileage calculator and compare it to the current
award rate.
Alaska Airlines has added another feather to its cap

What's great about this change is that
Mileage Plan isn't raising the cost of any
awards — it's just
making the shortest
awards even cheaper.
To evaluate Delta's promise to
make more seats available at the lowest
mileage levels, I picked a few routes and performed
award searches both before and after the new year for flights in May and June of 2015.

makes sense to book an
