mileage tied to the revenue
cost of the flight.
For example, an American Airlines frequent flyer can use AAdvantage miles to book a flight on British Airways, and the
cost of that ticket will be based on the American Airlines
mileage award chart.
The American Airlines AAdvantage loyalty program is a revenue - based program where miles are
awarded based on the
cost of the airfare as opposed to
mileage flown.
The
mileage cost to fly one
of ANA's partner airlines to Japan aren't as good redeeming miles for ANA flights, but the
award chart does have a few solid partner redemption options.
The American Airlines AAdvantage loyalty program is a revenue - based program where miles are
awarded based on the
cost of the airfare as opposed to
mileage flown.
Unfortunately, this means it would
cost 160,000 Delta SkyMiles to book an
award ticket, which is double the saver level
mileage cost of 80,000 miles.

cost of award travel on American Airlines - operated flights will be going up in many cases (and, in some cases, going down).
American Airlines devalued the AAdvantage program on 22 March 2016 (when the
cost of awards went up — some by over 60 %) and will be devaluing it again as
of 1 August 2016 when the loyalty program transitions over to a revenue based system for the purposes
of mileage earning.
Mileage earnings on Delta flights will soon be a lot better than in the past (across most fare bookings) and the
cost of most Economy Class transatlantic
award have come down....

Most Economy Class flyers are seeing no increase in their
mileage earnings and yet will have to deal with
award cost increases
of up to 72 % (ouch) while those who earn most
of their miles from shopping or credit card churning will also suffer in the same way.
If you earn most
of your miles from flying in Business Class / First Class then there's a good chance that the new higher
mileage earning rates will mostly offset any increases in
award costs (discounted Business Class will now earns 50 % more miles while, where
award costs have gone up they've done so by between 6 % and 72 %)
It does» t even guarantee that low - level
awards (those that are available to other SkyTeam partners as well) will always be priced at that level, since the
mileage cost of a ticket might also vary depending on the season.
But it's not nearly enough to just allocate them some kind
of uniform valuation, as some miles may be very valuable for a given type
of redemption (e.g. Avios for short - haul economy
awards) and quite a poor value for other types
of redemptions (for Avios, ultra long - haul in a premium cabin with high
mileage cost and often high fuel surcharges).
The carrier has reduced the
mileage cost of many reward flights, has increased earning levels on some partner airlines, and now allows free upgrades for elite members on
award flights when they book economy cabin tickets.
Award mileage accrual for tickets on partner airlines that are not issued by United, and for specialty tickets where United does not know what fare was paid (including unpublished, consolidator, bulk, group and tour tickets), is based on fair class and distance flown, not the
cost of the ticket.
Is the traditional airline loyalty reward chart — showing fixed

award trips — becoming a thing
of the past?
According to the
award chart, that should
cost a minimum
of 7,500
Mileage Plan miles.
To book the
award, fliers must call a dedicated reservations line that shaves off the
cost of the
mileage on specific routes.
What's great about this change is that
Mileage Plan isn't raising the
cost of any
awards — it's just making the shortest
awards even cheaper.
They're pushing up
mileage earning but they're capping that earning for the most expensive tickets, while they're pushing up the
cost of awards too (not just through the
award chart, err elimination
of award charts, but elimination
of stopovers and refusal to fix the broken pricing engine).
Business class
awards will still be expensive in cash outlay, and will start
costing more miles as well come June (with the ability to book at lower
mileage levels through December, a good and fair move to give reasonable notice
of changes to members).
