Last autumn a wave of popular protests were witnessed in the country's largest cities in the greatest challenge to
military rule since the crushing of pro-democracy demonstrations in 1988.
Of special significance is above all Obama's trip to Burma — a country under
military rule since the 1960's, which until recently invariably occupied the very far end of any civil liberties ranking.
