Amazon knows that people have access to
millions of public domain books for free.
Right after Sony's announcement that its new collection of eReaders would support the ePub format, Google announced it would be distributing
millions of its public domain eBooks as ePub downloads.

of e-books-as-the-future, you'll be well served by a number
of products on the market — you'll just probably be best served by Amazon.

The Kobo bookstore is a good one, offering over 2
million books (though more than a
million of those are free,
public domain books that every ebook store has).

domain e-books available from multiple sources.
Barnes and Noble inflates its Nook count with over a
million public domain titles, and Apple just recently passed the 100,000 - title mark in its iBooks store, which is so embarrassingly lame that Apple dropped iBooks from its Apps listings just as it was about to fall out
of the Top 20 listings.
However, more than a

domain books from Google Books.

As long as you understand that the Nook's
million titles include lots
of public -
domain freebies — both classics and forgotten curiosities — the fact that the e-reader offers Google books in such vast quantity is a pro, not a con.

Disregarding the
millions of free
public domain ebooks that most ebook stores tout as part
of their selection, Amazon most likely has the widest section
of ebooks on the planet.
The others are out -
of - print editions,

public domain like Google Books, and digital formats licensed out through major publishers including Harper Collins.
Kobo's store is tinier than the competition's: It advertises 2.3
million eBooks in its store, and 1.8
million of those are free ebooks in the
public domain.
Last month the mobile version
of Google Book Search for iPhone and Android made its debut, giving users access to more 1.5
million public domain books.
On top
of that, through Worldreader Mobile app, developed by biNu, more than 4.5
million mobile phone owners, mainly in Africa and Asia, has access to thousands
of books, from
public domain classics to contemporary fiction.
Earlier, Sony announced the availability
of more than one
million free
public domain books from Google, as well as new releases and New York Times bestseller titles available for USD$ 9.99.
When it comes to ebooks, for example, Google hasn't been able to compete with Amazon (s AMZN) or even Apple (s AAPL); its share
of the ebook market is likely in the single digits, and while 5
million ebooks sounds high, a lot
of those are free
public domain titles.
The example was used to show how irrational some clients can be; even when your returns are in the top 1 %
of all investment managers out there, some people can still find something to complain about (as an aside, that is why the truly successful mutual fund managers quickly exit the
public domain once they have made «enough», and then they tend to go super private by either managing their own money or investing privately on behalf
of some particular clients that they know to be rational — when you're worth tens and tens
