after watching the
film (with very low expectations,
mind you), I not only came out of the
film liking it, I'm considering it in my top 10 of the year so far.
Shore describes the period musical styles that came to his
mind after watching a quartet of primo bad Ed Wood
films, and his decision to use the theremin in his jazzy score.
After watching it a bit, I was trying to give Hill the benefit of the doubt and search my
mind for a way to justify this
film's entertainment value.
It's hard to know where to start or how to even describe Annihilation — part alien invasion
film, part surreal
mind - bender, part heartfelt melodrama... I was on the set a little over a year ago, spoke with the producers, director, production & art designers, saw the mood boards tracking the story of the
film, and
watched a particularly tense sequence
filmed — and yet even
after all of that, I'm still not sure what to expect.
But mostly this is one of those
films that is more interesting when reading people's opinions and analysis of it than actually
watching it (and sure enough, I find it far more interesting in my
mind after the fact).
However only
after watching a
film, if I ever felt conflicted or couldn't quite make up my
mind either way wether I liked or disliked a
film, I would always rely and turn to Roger's reviews first and foremost.
(This decision was later validated in my
mind after watching the 2004
film Troy, which I found just OK, despite the eye candy of Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Eric Bana.)
